Nestled between the very handsome Bellagio Hotel and the very elegant Bulgari Hotel lies one of Shanghai’s most iconic buildings, the Embankment Building, known to our Shanghainese friends as the Heben Building. When completed in 1932, the Embankment Building was the largest apartment building in Shanghai, containing 194 apartments over eight floors. The architects, Palmer and Turner had designed the building for one of their favourite clients, Sir Victor Sassoon. In 1937, Sir Victor Sassoon made part of the second floor available as a refugee processing centre, and at the end of the war the building housed foreign staff who were overseeing the resettlement of the refugees. Stephanie lives in the Embankment Building and has offered to lead this walk around her local neighbourhood. Highlights will include a quick peek inside China Post Office, a quick visit to Chai Lounge, the gallery of the wonderful Spanish designer Tucho, a brief tour of the Patek Philippe house, the former British Consul’s Residence and a step into Tiantong markets. The tour will start from the Embankment Building – 400 North Suzhou Lu- and will finish at East Nanjing Metro Station.
